Description

Female members of marginalized Roma communities are standing against multiple marginalizations, feeling disadvantage in social and private life; but often women are the bearers of social change in Roma communities. In particular, at the grassroot level, in perspective of social and community life women are involved in organizing recreational activities for children, social counseling and community activities. The project aims to promote civic participation and activism of local Roma women through non-formal education, community plans development, support activities directly in disadvantaged areas through promoting political participation and the formation of local action groups. The project expects to achieve greater public sensitization in relation to the Roma communities, with emphasis on Roma women, promotion of good practice and promoting public debate on the issue. The direct target group is 12 Roma women from six localities - Kecerovce, Rankovce, Varhaňovce, Vtáčkovce (Eastern Slovakia) and Mojmírovce, Zbehy (Western Slovakia). These women will attend 10 days of informal education and prepare small projects supporting their own objectives. The beneficiaries are community members and local municipalities.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project Civic participation of Roma women was to strengthen the vulnerable groups. In particular, it was the support of local activism of Roma women through non-formal education, creation of community plans, activities directly in the localities, encouraging political participation and formation of local action groups. The specific objective of the project was the sensitization of the public in relation to the Roma communities with a focus on Roma women, presentation of best practice examples and promotion of public debate on this issue in particular through the activities connected with the exhibition Succesful Roma women. Roma women do not have enough opportunities to participate in civic and political life, they are often bound by family obligations and stereotyping. In addition to ethnic discrimination by society. The direct target group were 12 Roma women from six localities - Kecerovce, Rankovce, Varhaňovce, Vtáčkovce (Eastern Slovakia) and Mojmírovce, Zbehy (Western Slovakia).During the project women have completed 12 days of non-formal education enabling them to improve their skills in several areas and use them in their local activities. The synergy of all activities helped to support the sustainability of the outcomes and ensure the creation of an informal platform of Roma women. All the assigned indicators have been successfully achieved and the project has been implemented as intended. The project was necessary and beneficial, we managed - through the exhibition of Succesful Roma women and activities related to it - to carry out two campaigns to highlight the situation of Roma women.Target groups were closely involved in the ongoing project activities in accordance with the timetable. The project was implemented in an informal partnership with the association Romano Kher - Roma House and the association Livingdocumentary. We have jointly prepared three documentaries - profiles of successful Roma women. Cooperation with the donor was good.
