Description

The project is needed in order to intensify school educational activities to educate an environmentally responsible generation. There is also a need to implement adaptation measures that would solve the long-lasting challenge to increase the use of rainwater. The objective of the project is to increase public environmental awareness and knowledge on the environment and the gradual climate change. It is expected that the implementation of the project will improve students' knowledge about the adaptation to climate change. Four adaptation measures are going to be implemented: A1- raingarden, A2 - greenhouse, A3 - small arboretum and A4 - exterior environmental classroom. A website reporting the progress of the project, its results and outcomes will also be set up. The project aims at three groups: children, students and non-governmental organizations.

Summary of project results

Before the project KVAPKA we only realized occasional short-term (day-to-day) activities of an environmental nature which related with the theme adaptation to climate change. We needed to create a comprehensive educational material for our pupils with this theme which would be part of the school education programe. This would increase the education, awareness and attitudes of pupils to the environment. We also wanted to prepare an environment in the area of the school for the adventurous teaching of Rainwater Management and Adaptation to Climate Change by implementing adaptation measures. Within the project, we created an internal environmental program called Kvapka. It extended the existing curriculum of selected subjects with two main themes regarding climate change and water management. We have implemented 4 adaptation measures that have solved the long-lasting problem of leaching rainwater from the roof to the school cesspool. We use this water for watering now. The realized adaptation measures are: a rain garden, a greenhouse, a miniature garden, an outdoor environmental classroom. We also set up a project sub-site at our web site and organized 4 information events. Achieved outputs of the project: internal environmental program Kvapka (the number of lessons according to the program Kvapka: baseline - 0 , achieved target - 128), adaptation measures: Rain garden and Greenhouse - creating to increase the percentage of campus area, which is disconnected from the storm sewer system (baseline - 0%, achieved target - 33%), an adaptation measure: Small arboretum - an own botanical garden, which is used for study purposes for pupils. During lessons, we observed unique glowing period of the trees. It is also the entertainment zone for the pupils, parents and the local community. We planted 31 trees and shrubs. Adaptation measure: Exterior environmental classroom is created by the garden house, teaching signs on the water and the meter of rainfall. We've set up a sub-page of the project on our web site, on which we are informed about all relevant activities and outputs of the project. We have completed all the planned information activities - the opening meeting, the expert workshop, the Day of trees and a final conference.
