Description

The project will focus on rainwater harvesting, recycling and reuse. It will involve children, parents, local communities and the general public. The objective of the project is increasing public environmental awareness about the issue of adaptation to climate change. Through the project implementation, an increased volume of rainwater will be reused and the knowledge among children about climate change adaptation measures will be increased. The curricula focused on the management of rainwater and climatic changes will be modified for the school education programme. Educational activities focused on environment will also be organised. Children, students and civil services are expected to benefit from the project implementation.

Summary of project results

Climate change, repeated floods, long lasting droughts were the impulse for entering the open call. The object was: -to capture and subsequent use rainwater by implementation of measures, -to change the climate at campus by planting and catching rainwater, -to increase awareness and education on climate change and measures for rainwater management in children’s minds. The object was completed and implemented into school curriculum. It is going to be a part of education for a long time. There were implemented 6 adaptation measures under the project through which the task is realizing directly or they are helpful at realization of curriculum. They are: -construction of rain lake, -construction of bioclimatic retention reservoir for infiltration of surface water playground, -construction of rainwater gardens, -planting trees and establishment of vegetation wall, -installation of above ground rainwater tanks, -construction of a wooden gazebo and a meteorological station. There were realized two meetings for developing and promoting curriculum management of rainwater and their link to climate change adaption measures – opening and final conference with parents, representatives from the council of City Sľažany, local citizens and students. The information about project was published to the general public via the school website and via local and regional newspaper. This theme is long time part of curriculum in each class the number 3 lessons a school year.
