Description

English studies have a long-standing tradition in Romania that spans over 200 years. Albeit an extremely important domain of research, this cultural heritage of writings, virtually uncharted, has never been reclaimed to this day. The project aims at identifying a representative corpus in the field of English studies and then digitise 250 volumes in the field of English studies from the latter half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th (that are no longer protected by copyright law) century, creating a database to be further incorporated in the Europeana Digital Library. The target group of the project consists of two major categories: the specialists (students and teachers from the high schools and universities in Romania, MA students, PhD students, researchers in the field of English studies, public and cultural institutions), and the general public (people interested in English studies who need information provided at an academic level).

Summary of project results

University of Bucharest has established a long-term partnership with the Romanian Academy Library and intends to preserve and promote the Romanian cultural heritage in the field of English Studies by increasing the number of digitized cultural resources and making them available to a wide audience. During the project a representative corpus in English studies was identified and over 250 volumes were digitized, creating a database to be further incorporated in the Europeana Digital Library, allowing the public to freely explore cultural resources. The project offered academics a virtual research environment and enhanced the opportunities for both students and teachers in high schools and universities to use the collection, increasing accessibility to and use of information. The deliverables of the project were the following: 1 list with the priority documentary corpus, a scientific evidence of the written cultural heritage in the collections of the libraries, 1 web catalog created to disseminate the digitized books.
