Description

The Roma population in Sercaia Communeis consist of 724 members counting for 23.58% of the total population. The Roma community is subject to rural segregation and makes up one of the most disadvantaged groups. Therefore, the project pays particular attention to the revitalization of public local education by addressing issues related to school dropouts and participation in the labour market. The main objective of the project is to improve access for Roma children to the local education system and of Roma youth to the labour market. The project aims to establish a day care centre to provide integrated services for 40 children aged 3-15 who are at risk of dropping out from school. The project also addresses the challenges facing 56 local young people who are looking for a job or do not have the necessary qualifications, by establishing a centre for social inclusion in Sercaia.

Summary of project results

According to its Development Strategy 2008-2015, Sercaia Commune (Brasov County) has a Roma population of 724 persons, i.e. 23,58% of the total population, which faces various challenges: lack of infrastructure, low education and qualification, school abandonment, lack of jobs that resulted in an inactivity rate of over 60%, lack of support services, stereotypes of employers regarding the Roma population etc. The project aimed to implement integrated measures, addressing children and youth at risk from Sercaia Commune. A day centre was established and properly equipped. A total of 60 children, out of which 50 Roma, have benefited from integrated support measures such as after school classes, medical and psychological support, non-formal education activities, serving meals at the centre. A total of 49 youth at risk, out of which 40 Roma, have received vocational counselling and guidance (drafting CV and letter of intent, carrier advice etc), training the occupations of worker in constructions and cleaning worker. 90 parents have received vocational counselling and guidance, support in drafting CV and letter of intent, advice and support for preparing employment documents. 13 specialists working with children and youth at risk have improved their competences, receiving certified training in project management. The project contributed to promoting social inclusion, reducing social inequalities and combating discrimination against the Roma population from Sercaia Commune.
