Description
Located in the town of Ocna Mures, Alba, in the community of “La Baraci” (home to 79 Roma households), the project has been designed to address the needs of local children and youth at risk of social exclusion. The main objective of the project involves the construction of an “Equal Opportunities” educational centre in the community. The centre will be able to offer targeted programs aimed at overcoming learning difficulties, deepen knowledge, providing homework support, building new skills, introducing artistic and sports activities for the Roma children, and provide counselling programs and job training for the youths, as well as occupational and social care for their parents. The main target group consists of 74 children and youths, of which 95.9 % are Roma.
Summary of project results
The project was implemented in a poor Rroma community from the Ocna Mureș town, ”La Baraci”.The project aimed to improve the status of the Rroma children and youth at risk from the community by facilitating their access to education and by involving actively the entire community in order to improve social inclusion. The main goals of the project are achieved.The access to education increased after an educational center was built in the community.The education level of 68 children and 17 youths increased after involving them in the project activities (after school, artistic activities, civic and health education, careers and psychological counselling).The involvement of the parents (46) increased after they were provided with support services, counselling and were taking part in common activities with their children. The most important result of the project which has a real impact on the beneficiaries is building a new educational center in the community, which facilitated the access to educational services, also the children where provided a hot meal. Children school dropout decreased and also the children results at school and their behavior improved.This Center will provide services for beneficiaries at least 5 years, starting with September 2016.During the implementing period, the project was visible through promoting activities, such web site promoting and local media and promoting materials.
