Description

Bacioiu village in the Romanian municipality of Corbasca is home to a high number of children and youth at risk. The community of Bacioiu is formed of a population 100% of Roma origin, and its inhabitants face an advanced level of poverty and an alarming rate of school drop-outs. The project will create an alternative educational and social facility - Multifunctional and Social Centre - for 130 Roma children and youth, and for 50 parents or carers, in order to prevent school dropouts and to increase the level of social inclusion by developing integrated social and educational services and active involvement of key social actors. The centre will provide educational services for children (school support and extra-curricular clubs), school reintegration of students who dropped out from school, life skills sessions, information, counseling and support groups for youth and parents/carers on health, hygiene, family planning, parental education, marriage, school and career guidance.

Summary of project results

Băcioiu is a village with 100% Roma population, belonging to Corbasca Commune, Bacău County. The village, despite the numerous Roma population, including children, did not have any kindergarten facility for children of pre-school age (3-4 years old). Also, there were children who had abandoned school or were at risk of school abandonment. The project aimed to prevent school abandonment and increase social inclusion of children and families from Bacioiu village. A multifunctional social centre has been build and equipped by the project. 120 children, all Roma, have benefitted from complementary educational activities, consisting in education for pre-school children, after-school classes, counselling, leisure clubs, excursions etc. 75 youth, all Roma, have participated in after-school classes, information and counselling for preventing school abandonment, education for life (hygiene education, family planning), vocational guidance. 75 parents, all Roma, have been received counselling for supporting school participation, performance and preparation for life of their children. The project contributed to prevention of school abandonment and school integration of children and youth from Corbasca Commune.
