Description

The Romanian muncipality of Ghindari in Mures County is home to a Roma community of 359 people, of which 83 children and 140 youths, many of which are facing social exclusion and poverty. Currently, the school dropout rate is 35%, and from 77 school-aged children and young people (7-18 years), 20 are not enrolled in compulsory education. The main objective of the project is the establishment of a Community Center, in which activities shall contribute to increasing the educational, professional and psychosocial level of Roma community. The Community Center will host different activities, including school after school, vocational training and health-education programs. Also, the center envisages the existence of periodic trainings and counseling for community members in the fields of health, rights and obligations, job training etc. Social services will contribute to closing gaps in the education of children, and a positive attitude towards school. 83 children and 80 young people belonging to the Roma population will benefit from the activities of the project.

Summary of project results

The project targeted Roma children and youths from Roma community Peste Apă, belonging to Ghindari commune from Mureș County. The project aimed to improve Roma children and youth educational, professional and psychosocial situation by providing them social services, like formal and non-formal activities within a community center. During the implementation period the project the promoter rehabilitate and equipped a building where the community center was set up and the project activities were developed. The main activities which contributed to achieve the outcomes and were educational, formal and non-formal activities (such as educational games, handcrafts activities, cooking) for 83 children, all belonging to Roma ethnic. For increasing the abilities and competencies of youths, about 30 of them attended a carpenter and/or a farmer course. 80 youths from the community attended vocational and personal development counselling sessions. The project visibility was realized through the project`s web site, press release in local media and promoting materials (folders, posters) distributed in the community.
