Description

In Romania's Sutesti Commune, the 1500 Roma residents make up more than a quarter of the total population. Of these, many are living in extreme conditions, facing poverty, lack of financial income, lack of decent living conditions such as running water, sewage, domestic heating, and lack of food and other basic supplies. Most members of the community do not have basic education, nor the necessary self-confidence and communication skills to improve their own situation. The main objective of the project is to improve access to education, health, training and information for children and young people at risk, with a special focus on Roma children and youth, and their parents. The project will see the establishment of a Community Educational Centre to facilitate social inclusion for 60 children (50 Roma) and 35 youths (30 Roma) at-risk and their families. It will improve school attendance and contribute to raising awareness on the importance of education, health and environmental protection.

Summary of project results

The project was implemented by Șuțești Commune, Braila County, in partnership with Association Center for Information and Documentation for European Integration and Sustainable Development Braila. The project aimed to facilitate children, youth and parents access to integrated services, formal and non-formal education within the community educational center newly built during the project period, in order to increase their social inclusion. A number of 60 children (out of which 50 Roma) and 30 youth (out of which 15 Roma) were involved in formal and non-formal activities, such as: after school activities, recreational activities, health education and environmental activities. There was also organized for the beneficiaries a course that trained them to use and operate the computer. The 10 specialists (teachers, tutors) which worked directly with the children were trained about using non-formal activities in their daily work with the beneficiaries, for improving children and youth life skills. During the implementation period there were organized two campaigns: one had the purpose to inform and raise awareness of the necessity of education and the other`s purpose was to provide health and environmental education to parents, teachers, children and youth. The project visibility was realized through the project`s web site, press release in local media and promoting materials (folders, posters) distributed in the community.
