Poienile Village in Dagata Commune represents a compact Roma community. The village consists of 288 inhabitants grouped in 66 households, situated at 7 km from the center of the Dagata Commune. In this village, there is a severe lack of infrastructure and utilities, the water supply coming from wells. A priority issue is represented by the low level of education in the community, which leads to lack of skills and makes it impossible to access stable jobs. Poienile community is exposed to territorial and social segregation, meaning that a large portion of the population is vulnerable and at risk. The main objective of the project is to reduce the social gap between this Roma community and the neighbouring community from Dagata, by building an educational center. The main target group consists of 68 Roma children and their parents (68). The project will include activities to enhance the school performances of the children, and to address social, sanitary and educational aspects.
Summary of project results
The project intervention in a small rural community was necessary to improve the access for children at formal and non formal education and to decrease school dropping. The main goals of the project are achieved, as at the end of the implementing period, an educational centre was built in Poienile community, 68 Rroma children are direct beneficiaries in the project activities, (including food providing) and 68 Rroma parents are provided with parental education knowledge. This Centre will provide services for beneficiaries at least 5 years after project completion. The project activities involved other members of the community too, through meetings and consulting activities, door to door activities (in order to promote the project activities and to select the project beneficiaries). During the implementing period, the project was visible through promoting activities, such web site promoting, Facebook page promoting, local media and promoting materials. The most important result of this project is the educational centre, because the only access to education for the children from Poienile village was the local school, which is functioning in an old building. The project encouraged the collaboration within local authorities (the project was implemented in partnership with the local school, during the project implementing were signed agreements with Children Palace – Iași in order to organize an exhibition during the Photo voice activity and with The Public Health Division Iași, in order to provide materials concerning health, personal hygiene etc.) and with other community members, by organizing community meetings concerning the project activities and the beneficiaries and as a result, the access at education increased for the children in this community, as well as the level of awearness for their parents, regarding the importance of education.
