Description

The project is necessary to facilitate the development of the social capital of the village Belin, where all community members can benefit, including Roma, contributing to local development and social justice by implication and participation. The main objective of the project is to develop the multiethnic community by promoting active citizenship and fostering local initiatives in the village of Belin, by implicating community members in the process of elaborating a Community Development Plan, creating a Multifunctional Center to address real community issues and organizing an information campaign whit the title “We are responsible” As community representatives come from different ethnic groups and have an active role in shaping their regions future in the Community Development Plan, problem identification becomes more accurate and commitment for implementation is significantly increased.

Summary of project results

The goal of the project was to develop the local community in Belin (Covasna County) and to increase the social capital on a medium and long term. The project addressed issues like the lack of consensus among ethnicities regarding community needs and their priorities and the lack of a community development plan jointly prepared. In order for the community plan to be developed properly, it should involve key people from the community representing the interests of all ethics living there. In the same time, the project addressed issues like the low levels of social integration among the Roma community members. The services provided through the project started in July 2016, in 2 locations in Belin village. Life skills development trainings were undertaken, with 3 different age groups (a total of 6 groups) and an average of 93 children attendance each session. Counselling services, offered help for 359 beneficiaries until the project ended. Health and social mediation services were also provided, offering help to 810 beneficiaries, out of which 126 were patients transported to different medical units. The project was promoted through 4 events and publications (such as Community Development Plans, bilingual flyers, bilingual banners and 11 articles in the local press). The campaign “We are responsible” was the most rewarding and popular part of our project, with its 2 awareness campaigns, gathering waste from the riverbed and streets and the 3 community actions to renovate the homes of 3 destitute persons/families. These activities were proposed by members of community and selected by a committee elected from community stakeholders. As the local community suggested and after a public consultation took place, EKG equipment for cardiology services with remote reading was purchased, offering long term help trough the community services provided by the Community leader.
