Description

Our project is addressed the young Roma and non-Roma origin the rural areas with low opportunities with families who have insufficient incomes or living in monoparental families or whose parents are working abroad and do not have enough support to continue studies needed to develop a professional career. Most times because of these social factors but also because they did not reproach models who came from their community and to the contrary, young people decide not to continue their studies. Our premise is that if there is a collaboration between Roma and non-Roma youth who have completed high school or also those who are being secondary or high school graduation, some of the factors mentioned above, such as inequalities between rural / urban, lack of highlights, young models that have adapted, overcoming stereotypes and discrimination, inadaptation to a new life educational system can be overcome if together young Roma and non-Roma create a supportive community and support to make easier transition from school to the high school / college.

Summary of project results

Our project was addressed to young Roma and non-Roma from rural areas, with low opportunities and families who have insufficient income, living in single parent families or whose parents are working abroad. The premise from which the promoter started when developing the project idea was that that if there is collaboration between Roma and non-Roma they can overcome stereotypes and discrimination, they can adapt better to life situation and to the educational system. Young adults can create a supportive community and support themselves in order to also make the transition to high school/college a lot easier. A series of workshops were organised on topics chosen by the youth involved, together with their mentors: ethnic identity, interculturalism, hate speech and violence against Roma/non-Roma women. Three visits to schools / universities were organised, due to the fact that the youth also identified the need to know more about their options for schools / colleges. Also, a series of intercultural activities were organised, such as two visits with teams from Spanţov at an open lesson in Oltenița about Roma history and culture. The teams were also involved in activities with youngsters from Gălbinași, during which they exchanged views and impressions about Roma traditions and culture. Youth from Mărginenii de Jos organised an exchange of experience with peers from the Greek community in Ploiești; the activity was attended by 38 youth, which shared their knowledge about the history of both ethnicities in Romania. A campaign that focused on a local problem that youth are facing in the community was also organised. In Spanţov, youth proposed and organised the campaign “Knowledge is power”, about the importance of continuing education and the obstacles encountered. In Mărginenii de Jos, youth proposed and organised a fundraising campaign with the aim of building a sports ground in the community. At the end of the project a 3-day seminar with the youth involved in the programme was organised, tackling issues such as violence against women, harassment, human rights, planning the future, opportunities for young adults.
