Description

At this point, there is no method to establish and manage ecological corridors, monitor custodian to assure that they fulfill their duties regarding the protected areas or solve environmental incidents. The project aims to develop methodologies for establishing ecological corridors for large mammals, migratory fish, and migratory birds, a brochure, and an IT application which will help monitor the ecological corridors, the custodians and manage environmental incidents. The beneficiaries of the project will be the National Environmental Guard employees, media, Ministry of Environment, custodians and also the general public. They will learn how to use the software application developed within the project and will be equipped with the necessary gear to use it. The partner is a Norwegian software company, providing innovative IT solutions and services who will develop the software application necessary to improve environmental protection in Romania. The two parties will work together in fulfilling the objectives of the project.

Summary of project results

The main and specific project’s objectives are closely correlated with the main objectives of the Programme RO 02- "BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES". The main project objective is the development of methodologies for establishing ecological corridors for large mammals, migratory fishes, and migratory birds and the training of administrators of protected areas for their better management. Objectives: Development of the methodologies establishing the ecological corridors for large mammals, migratory birds and migratory fishes. Improvement of the capacity to manage and monitor the ecological corridors by training and equipping the administrators of the protected areas. Results Both the main and specific project’s objectives contribute to attain the main programme’s objective, „implementation of solutions for the problem of ecosystems degradation, improvement of the knowledge level regarding the contribution to stopping the loss of biodiversity in Romania” by: Developing a methodology establishing ecological corridors for large mammals Developing of a methodology establishing ecological corridors for migratory birds Developing a methodology establishing ecological corridors for migratory fishes Training 300 conservators of protected areas in using the IT applications developed through the project for the efficient monitoring of ecological corridors Equipping the conservators of protected areas with mobile equipment to ensure the map representation of ecological corridors and to transmit real-time information to NEG commissaries from the field Organization of 3 workshops to increase the interested parties’ awareness regarding protected areas and ecological corridors. Developing an interactive GIS maps that sets the protected areas’ limits and enables the establishment of ecological corridors 1 platform for managing and monitoring the protected areas and ecological corridors 1 software application for mobile phone The contribution of the project results to the achievement of the RO02 Program's objectives Number of methodologies for establishing ecological corridors, including criteria for designating them for identifying critical areas where ecological corridors are needed Indicators in the funding guide for call 2 - 1 methodology Project result: 3 methodologies Number of people with increased capacity in managing and monitoring ecological corridors Indicators in call funding guide 2 - 100 people Project result: 300 people from protected areas + 630 people from GNM

Summary of bilateral results

The project contributes directly to the consolidation of the bilateral relations between the Donating States and Romania, through the involvement of the Norwegian partner in the key activities of the project. The six principles of good governing specified in the Guide are activated in the project logic, the project being participative and inclusive, responsible and transparent, efficient, receptive and aligned to legal provisions. The project will be implemented in partnership with Computas Norway - an IT company with experience in the development of IT applications similar to those provided in the project herein and who will implement sub-activities: Development the project’s website Development of interactive GIS maps that sets the protected areas’ limits which enable the establishment of ecological corridors Development of a mobile phone software application that notifies the current position within the protected area Development of the platform that manages and monitors the protected areas and ecological corridors
