Description

Studies in the Sesimbra region identified a low literacy sea level from the local community who have been away from the fishing and coastal knowledge traditions. This project aims to fill this gap by promoting multigenerational activities by training young reporters for the sea literacy. The aim is to use young people (students of the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education) as a communication vehicle for sea literacy, empowering them through networking with the fishing community and the media, in order to reach the general public, increasing their awareness and knowledge on fishing and the sea. Additionally, it is planned to consolidate this network with continuity purposes. This project aims to project itself on a wider audience by building knowledge conveyed in the form of journalistic news, in particular: Fishing Gear Sustainability; Biodiversity Assessment; Marine Litter; Aiola as a cultural value; The future of fishing.

Summary of project results

Sesimbra is a fishing village where fishing was, throughout history, the central aspect. Over the years, with entry into the EU imposing new rules and building pressure along the coast, the local community was pushed inland. The younger ones lost direct contact with the sea and their activities and the ocean literacy was lost. With the project there was a mutual recognition of the various local institutions of this need, having previously embraced this project so that they could contribute to the enrichment of the local community with regard to Ocean Literacy, and more specifically to Literacy on the Sea Local. Locals, and even more so, the local youths presented before this project a great level of ignorance about the most basic questions about the sea, including the key themes of this project: they did not recognize the typical vessels of their own region; they did not know the existence of the Professor Luíz Saldanha Marine Park; they were unaware of the richness of local biodiversity and the dangers of litter to the marine environment. This project had as main objective the increase of ocean literacy, through the development of a process of communication and extended involvement of three communities: school, fishing and social communication. In order to reach this objective, the project proposed to take advantage of the young people (students of the 3rd cycle of the EB and of the Secondary School) as communication vehicles for sea literacy, enabling them through a network with the community fishing and social communication in order to reach the general public by increasing their awareness and knowledge of fisheries and the sea. This project aimed at projecting itself to a wider public through the construction of reported knowledge in the form of journalistic articles and interviews, namely on: Sustainability of fishing gear; Biodiversity; Marine litter; Typical Boats. publications (printed) - Information posters 6; no. of publications (online) - Articles / Interviews in "Mares de Sesimbra" 5; number of publications (printed) - Articles in "O Sesimbrense" 6; broadcasts - news from other media at both school and local level 5; number of publications (printed and / or online) - Project dissemination materials (posters, posters, leaflets, printed / digital invitations) 5; Videos made by the students (not counting the videos of the interviews) 5; PowerPoint presentations by the students and / or invited experts available for the whole school community 8
