Description
The "MIA - revealing the Water Invisible World" project proposes to increase ocean literacy, addressing the ecology of phytoplankton (root of the aquatic food chain) and their vulnerability to climate change and pollution on marine / coastal systems. The microscopic beings are easily forgotten in awareness-raising, although essential for understanding the ecological dynamics of aquatic systems. The main target audience includes children from pre-primary, primary and secondary in the region, although actions to society in general are also provided. A fishing community of the Murtosa municipality will serve as a case study, replicable to other municipalities with similar characteristics. The intention of this project is to integrate arts in environmental education activities, while exploring the senses as a stimulus to emotional intelligence and thus attempt the emotional assimilation of the scientific / environmental message by the citizens, ensuring a more effective awareness of the active population now and in the future (through children).Various promotional materials will result from the project: site + book + CD + animation.
Summary of project results
The knowledge of the beings that inhabit the oceans is still generally restricted to the most popular and macroscopic, making it essential to make known the microscopic beings that are the basis of the ecological dynamics of the oceans and who are the most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. The main objective of the MIA project is to contribute to the increase in ocean literacy. Different approaches will be used, depending on the age range of the target audience, and actions for society in general will not be forgotten. A key point of these actions of scientific dissemination and environmental education will be the integration of the arts, simultaneously exploring the senses as a stimulus to emotional intelligence and, thus, promoting the assimilation of the scientific / environmental message in a more emotive way by the citizens, and challenge the less enthusiastic about these issues. Given the broad age spectrum of target audiences, MIA contributes to sensitization of the present active population but, above all, prepares a future generation to deal in a participatory way with environmental issues (through the education of children). And children today are undoubtedly the best vehicle for the change of mindset in the near future. Outputs of the project: • MIA project website and facebook • Participation of more than 20 classes of preschool, basic and secondary education (they reached 56 classes involved in the various MIA actions); • Involvement of more than 80 researchers, specialists, teachers, technicians and auxiliaries in educational actions; • Conducting more than 18 science lectures (reaching 35 in general) and more than 74 sessions of artistic activities and music workshops; animation / cinema; theater / dance (reaching 90, including contests, festivals and exhibition), many open to the general public. • Elaboration of publicity material (website, book + CD, pamphlets, films / animation).
