Description

The manuscript of Pan Tadeusz by Adam Mickiewicz kept at the Ossolineum is one of the most valuable Polish manuscripts. In 2006 the Municipality of Wroclaw turned over to the Ossolineum certain historic buildings situated in the historic centre of Wrocław. Major reconstruction works in the buildings were completed in 2010. The program (which takes into account the needs of various visitors including children and elder generations) involves exhibitions, research, education activities – in collaboration with museums and libraries in Poland and abroad, based on shared cultural heritage. The mission is to show the significance of Mickiewicz’s work, and thus to show the importance of a poem as a document sui generis, a carrier of national values as well as a text shaping the modern perception of the past. The following works need to be carried out: remodelling of the historic building housing the museum, construction of a treasury, adaptation of the building to the needs of people with disabilities, equipping the building with multimedia systems, digitalisation and conservation of historic objects.

Summary of project results

The project enabled the creation of a new cultural sphere - the Pan Tadeusz Museum of National Ossoliński Institute in Wroclaw. The mission of the Pan Tadeusz Museum is to show the value of Adam Mickiewicz's greatest achievement, which went on to change the historical and cultural fabric of Europe over the past two centuries, while also showing how this epic poem continues to shape our thinking about tradition and cultural identity. One of the museum's aims is therefore to show this masterpiece and its author in the socio-cultural context of the epoch as strongly grounded in the realities of Europe of its time, along with Polish traditions of struggling for freedom and independence. The following works wer carried out: remodelling of the historic building housing the museum, construction of a treasury, adaptation of the building to the needs of people with disabilities, equipping the building with multimedia systems, digitalisation and conservation of historic objects. The Pan Tadeusz Museum of National Ossoliński Institute in Wroclaw continues to promote the most vivid and active aspects of Polish culture, seeking a language which makes it possible to present the cultural legacy of this great work of literary art in a contemporary context. Thanks to the innovative technologies, the Museum presents the living heritage of the Romantic period in ways which are accessible and multi-layered. Across 1,500 square metres of exhibition space and 18 rooms gathered together 700 exhibits along with over 100 games, installations and multimedia presentations. The museum presents visitors with a range of temporary exhibitions and a rich cultural programme, including meetings with authors and educational workshops. So far the Museum has been visited by 69 010 (till July 30, 2017) people, which confirms, how much was the investment needed. The Museum is fully adapted for the disabled. So far, the Museum has organized 11 temporary exhibitions, and many other cultural events, festivals, didactic and educational activities (1321 museum classes, 176 museum art workshops in the first 12 months). The permanent exhibition presents objects digitised and conserved within the project. These activities allowed to conserve previous cultural heritage. 52 new job position have been created thanks to the project.
