Description

The project responds to issues experienced by the largest residential area in Skierniewice (barely any sense of community, intergeneration conflicts, poor perception of the area, social and cultural neglect). It particularly targets young people characterised by high potential but low community involvement. Our main direct goal is to support young people's initiatives for their community in order to improve it. Our key method will be empowerment (supporting individuals and strengthening their action potential) and the main tool: culture animation. They following will be delivered: research, animation activities, training and initiatives designed and delivered by young people themselves. The project is designed to ensure learning by doing opportunities and the space to apply new skills in the real world. Importantly, most activities will take place in carefully selected public spaces which are open and democratic.

Summary of project results

"Almost half ot the Skierniewice population live in one housing estate called Widok. The population density if this part of the town is more than twice of the density in other areas of Skierniewice. The houses and buildings are of low standard, green areas as well as well developed common areas are lacking. The area is perceived in a negative way and is scornfully referred to as “behind the railroad"". This creates a lot of problems resulting from the social situation of the area inhabitants, including securing private space, isolation, lack of neighbourhood relations and sense of community. Problems are also caused by lack of cultural offer and afterschool activities for children and youth. The aim of the project was to improve young people's involvement in their community life of the Widok estate. Thanks to the project implementation, a group of 49 young leaders was created. They develop and implement activities in the community that is suffering from social and cultural neglect. The project implementation resulted in carrying out research animation initiatives and in-depth studies and working out a social diagnosis of the Widok estate. Young project participants took part in a cycle of art workshops and training on planning and implementing cultural activities. They also developed and implemented 5 big community initiatives. The project beneficiaries were young people living in the Widok estate in Skierniewice."
