Description

The project proposes streetworking activities in the Wrocław district of Nadodrze between March 1, 2014 and February 29, 2016. It targets 38 young people aged 12-18 threatened by social exclusion. The goal is to ensure social and cultural inclusion of youth by forming 5 streetworking groups, support their innovative initiatives using interactive techniques, create youth leaders and involve them in decision-making. The following activities are envisaged: streetworking supervision, animation, education workshops and meetings, regular attendance in cultural events, visiting entertainment facilities, and 5 mini-projects related to participants’ interests, including one mini-project on hate speech in the internet. The project will generate a professional team of street educators in a disadvantaged part of the city. The partnership with the local middle school will help apply a broad approach to youth education and support.

Summary of project results

"Nadodrze is one of the poorest and disadvantaged communities in the city of Wrocław. According to local welfare services, about 40 per cent of young people living in central Wrocław came from families affected by poverty and social exclusion. There is no institutional provision of meaningful leisure, education, prevention and development activities. The project reaches out to youth in families struggling with major problems with income, social behaviour addictions and/or domestic violence. A child raised in such a family environment falls into a closed loop of problems related to their parents but often determining their future. The project aimed at involving young people in community affairs by forming five street working teams, supporting their alternative initiatives by ensuring active participation, youth leadership and involvement in decision-making. The project formed a group of 38 youth leaders who have learned to be more independent, better at time management and planning/implementing community projects. A range of activities helped provide a structured support and assistance for individuals threatened by social exclusion by forming the Playthere club. Moreover, youth produced murals, installations and musical pieces which provides evidence of more involvement of the socially vulnerable youth in the local culture in Nadodrze. The project provided: supervision of street workers, engagement activities, workshops and education meetings, regular participation in cultural events and visits to entertainment facilities, and five mini-projects, one of which addressed hate speech. The project targeted youth in the Wrocław community of Nadodrze. The participation of the project partner, Middle School No. 4, helped reach out to youth with the absenteeism problem. The project team individually consulted with the local psychologist, educator and teachers at Middle School No. 4 on other social integration issues experienced by the target youth."
