Description

The urban floodplain is an area with a lot of functions but also specific problems. The aim of water management must be accommodated to and balance with esthetics and recreational functions, biodiversity protection and ecosystem stability. The problem of the area on the embankments in Warsaw are invasive alien species, and above all the Solidago canadensis. The project objective is to restore the proper state of natural habitats for species in selected parts of Warsaw. The project will result in the restoration of the partially wooded landscape with flood-meadows on the embankments of the riverside, with a particular focus on the celeriac meadows which are protected by the Habitats Directive as Habitat number 6440. It applies frequent mowing to suppress the growth of an invasive alien species, the Solidago gigantea, and re-introduces native meadow species by sowing seeds and transferring seed-containing fresh hay from well-preserved donor meadows. The recipient sites are prepared by topsoil removal or deep ploughing. Citizens of Warsaw, organisations and institutions responsible for nature protection are expected to benefit from the project.
