Description

The project is needed because of the heavy anthropogenic impact on species and habitats mainly from improper forms of tourism and fishing. The objective is creating and applying effective tools for broad protection of biological diversity of the Baltic Sea in the area of the Gulf of Gdansk. The project aims at limiting the anthropogenic impact and hazards endangering biological diversity; a more aware society; a diagnosing and rehabilitation background for compensating the mortality of sea mammals; an ability to carry out effective field interventions; and supporting institutions responsible for making environmental decisions. It will do so through observation, patrol, intervention, educating, informing, providing information and data, developing diagnostics and treatment of sea mammals, providing tools and improving facilities for educating the society and implementing the Baltic grey seal rehabilitation programme. The society in general will benefit from the marine ecosystem and institutions that administer the protection and use of the environment.

Summary of project results

All activities planned within the project have been implemented, the final report has been approved. Results of implementation of the entire project: increasing awareness of and education in biodiversity and ecosystem services, including awareness of and education in the linkage between biodiversity and climate change, and economic valuation of ecosystems (Number of people who have participated in educational activities and promoting the conservation of biodiversity: 913 416); development of social attitudes and ecological behavior and increase public involvement in the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems. Within the project the following activities were implemented: publication of the educational materials, organization of the conferences, publication of the website. Biodiversity conservation measures were implemented by one non-governmental organization.
