Description

The project of great importance due to the low numbers of the global population of the European bison, isolation between herds and the risk of genetic variability losses which are all serious threats for the European bison. The aim of the project is the creation of a metapopulation of bison in North-East Poland which may rebuild a natural gene flow and increase the population size. The main objective of the project is to continue the proper management of existing populations and preparing other regions for new populations. The expected results of the project will be adequate management and monitoring of existing populations, the creation of a new herd in Żednia Forestry, a prepared site for reintroduction in Augustowska Forest and the evaluation of the possibility of reintroducing bison in the Romincka Forest. The project is one of many steps to create a metapopulation. Several workshops and conference will help gain the acceptance of local communities. The target group is the endangered species Bison bonasus as well as the local communities and institutions connected to nature protection.

Summary of project results

All activities planned within the project have been implemented, the final report has been approved. Results of implementation of the entire project: Increased capacity to manage and monitor Natura 2000 sites effectively; improved condition of protection of species covered by projects on Natura 2000 sites (1 species covered by protection aimed at achieving the output); improved condition of protection of habitats covered by projects on Natura 2000 sites (4 Natura 2000 sites, covered by projects under implementation aimed at recovering proper state of biodiversity on Natura 2000 sites). The main aim of the Project was to continue proper management of existing populations and preparing other regions for new populations. Within the project the following activities were implemented: organization of the seminars and the conference, publication of the brochure promoting the project, the educational materials and the website.
