Description

The aim of the project is to ensure social rehabilitation and support service for people with dementia living in Ventspils city and its district, as well as promoting their rehabilitation and social integration. The activities will focus on development of constant list of services by taking into account the needs of the clients, recruit specialists (a social worker, a rehabilitator, an ergotherapist, a carer and activity supervisors), organize social care and rehabilitation services as well as activities for day care clients with regard to to establishing a functioning day centre for people with dementia with a variety or services available and a possibility to receive an individual support for the client and members of their family. With this project, the society's attention will be drawn to the problems and solutions regarding people with dementia; social awareness and support for the families will increase overall tolerance and will improve the social well-being of people with dementia.

Summary of project results

The aim of this project was to ensure a complex of social rehabilitation and support services for persons with dementia in Ventspils city. The target group of this project was involved by cooperating with family doctors and psychiatrists because these specialists have the most information about people with corresponding diagnosis. 32 clients have visited this centre on a regular basis. A stable and wide rehabilitation service choice adapted to the individual needs of clients has been created. These services have been provided by the specialists working in the day centre – 1 social worker, 1 social rehabilitator, 1 ergo - general practitioner, 1 carer and 7 volunteers for different activities, 1 masseur and 1 physiotherapist. During the project 291 activity took place, altogether 335 hours, during which the main emphasis was put on the memory training, speed and subtlety of thinking, developing concentration skills, small motility of fingers. Clients were able to receive a therapeutical massage course of 15 hours and to participate in 20 hours of physiotherapy. By providing psycho-social and informative support, 26 client family members were involved in a support group of people with dementia. During the project 32 client cases were set up, and 100 persons, including family members of the clients, were consulted by a social worker about different questions according to the dementia patient everyday life. To attract society’s attention to solving problems of dementia patients and to inform about the day centre’s services, an open day event was organized, in which 33 participants took place, including clients, voluntary workers, non-governmental organization representatives, local government representatives and partners. After the end of this project the multi-functional day centre for people with dementia “Ventiņmāja” continues to work and it’s operation is further financed by the organization “Latvian Red Cross” Kurzeme committee.
