Description

2.4% of Latvian inhabitants have diabetes. Diabetes patients need specific knowledge to be able to live with this disease. The project aim is to ensure improvement of diabetes patients’ welfare by educating and informing them about their rights and possibilities, to contribute to economic development of the region by informing local inhabitants and encouraging them to take care of their health. To achieve the aim the society will provide possibility for anyone interested to check the glucose and cholesterol level in their blood for free, organize a camp, a diabetes treatment learning program, events on the World Diabetes Day, a workshop, where one can learn to cook various vegetable dishes and organize a study trip to Lithuania. The project is expected to benefit diabetics (incl. children), local inhabitants and NGO members.

Summary of project results

The project was necessary because diabetes is one of the most widespread diseases in the world and it is not possible to cure it. The objective of the project was to promote well-being of diabetes patients by educating and informing them of their rights and opportunities, as well as to promote economic growth in the region by urging public to take care of their health. The objective is achieved. Within the project members of the association and public are informed and trained for the risk of diabetes and problems associated with it. The following activities took place within the project: • 12 informative activities Win Diabetes Together, 560 persons have been advised. • 3 informative activities within World Diabetes Day: an action of measuring sugar and cholesterol, training Tea Day and the discussion Let’s Talk about Diabetes, 170 participants have taken part in these activities. • 1 informative workshop NOT Sweet Life with Diabetes, 23 participants have taken part in the workshop. • Three-day camp School of Diabetes, that have included lectures, consultations, classes about questions of diabetes, 15 participants have taken part in the camp. • Seven-day training programme of stationary treatment for diabetes patients, 20 participants. • A website of the association has been established. • An enquiry on awareness of diabetes has been organised. • An experience exchange trip to Lithuania. • A closing meeting and a press conference, 52 participants. • The booklet Ludza Association of Diabetes has been prepared and released, 700 copies. The target group of the project has gained a lot of valuable information about the disease control and possibilities to customize lifestyle to health. Within the project it has been drawn attention to the issue of health care for diabetes patients, as well as to the topical question of necessity to monitor sugar level not only in old age, but the whole life. The members of the association have become competent consultants during the project and continue to give advice also after the end of the project.
