Description

Surface water quality has environmental, ecological, public health effects, thus the protection and development of it, is a very important task. Moreover protection and sustaining good quality status of lakes is the most important target of European Water Policy. Pollutants are mostly occurred in ports where presence of artificial impacts are highly intensive, thus this is the site where project is focused on. The aim of the project is a complex system and a technological description to protect surface water (freshwater lakes) quality in ports. The result has two different parts: one of them is setting up a standard water quality monitoring and a support system for intervention, the second is a technological description for integration of water cleaning systems. Integration of different innovative individual monitoring technologies and water cleaning technologies into cooperative systems which is able to alarm and avoid contaminations is the expectation of the project. The aim of these integrations is to improve and sustain the quality of water in lake ports. The integration of monitoring methods and cleaning technologies will be able to be adapted to the ports specialties. Thus although the project test site is the Lake Balaton in Hungary, but the project owners plan to give recommendations for other lake ports also based on their results. The project owner is the only participant.

Summary of project results

Surface water quality has environmental, ecological, public health effects, thus the protection of it is a very important task. The aim of the project is a complex system and a technological description to protect surface water (freshwater lakes) quality in ports. As a first step of the project, a very special and unique measuring system was established to measure the most important parameters of surface water. With the usage of this system those circumstances which influence badly the natural quality can be demonstrated which may be harmful for human health, for our surroundings , our animal world and lastly for material needs. Comparing to the passive technology of sampling, the new, innovative, automated system operating with limits is very helpful because the harmful pollution can be measured immediately. This system is able to measure continuously the water state, both permanent water and varying water. The system operation is based on variables for which there are determined limits and above the limit the system will automatically take a sample of the water. The automatic system will keep the samples for future monitoring. Due to the continuous monitoring the system able to start interventions and information protocol which will make faster the complex implementation of water protection. The second element of the project besides it is connection to filtration and cleaning protocol is establishing a local specialized water cleaning technology based on biology. The exact cleaning procedure was studied and evaluated first than the researchers made a differentation by the gained results. The solution is a passive, biological cleaning settlement in the channel and also in the bottom of the port located in Balatonfenyves (where autotroph animals that are utilizing inorganic nutrients for being alive, living together with other animals, such as shell gathering, living coat on biological suppliers and with lurking hetertroph animals that are eating them. The detailed description of the establising water cleaning procedure is in the connected tasks.
