Description

The mobility project is vital as the Hungarian and Norwegian partner universities involved have reached a stage in their ongoing joint research at which co-operation needs to be intensified further. This need can be catered to with the help of mobility of both researchers and their students alike. Specifically, the mobility programme is envisaged to result in participants (both partner researchers and students) having a better understanding of the social embedding of changes in English by having research-induced specialisation courses in Language Acquisition, Multilingualism and Language Change, based on their ongoing joint research. Furthermore, thanks to the mobility programme, the Hungarian and Norwegian partner researchers, working on their current project on syntactic changes in English from an information structure and sociolinguistics perspective, will have the opportunity to meet other researchers and disseminate their findings on a regular basis at international conferences and symposia.

Summary of project results

The original reasons of the project proposal were as follows: (1) To give students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge by taking some specialisation courses at the partner universities not normally offered in their home institution. (2) To give the opportunity to Hungarian and Norwegian partner researchers in English historical linguistics and English applied linguistics to meet and disseminate their findings at symposia and at workshops and in lectures . (3) To provide the participants a better understanding of the social embedding of changes in English in the fields of language acquisition, multilingualism and language change based on their ongoing joint research. The project’s objective was achieved almost completely, as the above reasons (taken from the project proposal) were fully adhered to and acted upon, and we established foundations for the long term continuation of the collaborations set up. The only thing we missed was a larger number of donor country students and staff visiting us, despite all efforts by donor partner and their calls out at their institution. Major outputs delivered: 1 international conference presentation, to be followed by a book chapter; 2 new project and joint research proposals/ideas; multiple public lectures to disseminate research findings for a wider audience at the departments; multiple teach-in experiences for incoming and outgoing staff. 1 international conference presentation, to be followed by a book chapter; 2 new project and joint research proposals/ideas; 4 public lectures to disseminate research findings for a wider audience at the departments; 8 teach-in experiences for incoming and outgoing staff.

Summary of bilateral results

The cooperation was established on the basis of past joint work at CASTL, Centre of Excellence at Tromsö University during 2012, while Tamás Eitler was staying their with NRC Yggdrasil research grant. At the end of the project, it was agreed with head professor Marit Westergaard, to pursue collaboration further, with the help of EEA or other grants if they start. The project considerably contributed to strengthening bilateral relations on all levels (department, research group, university) and building a network of researchers who can activate their potential when the need arises. It has already been agreed upon he cooperation with the donor partner will continue after the project is completed, perhaps In the next round of EEA Grants or outside, depending on the circumstances. • 1 conference presentation, with 1 paper to be published • 2 new project proposals/ideas via monitoring/shadowing mobility • 4 public lectures for a wider academic audience, for a broader dissemination of results, • improved knowledge and understanding of the teaching and research environment and processes at each other’s institutions (via 8 intensive teach-ins for ca. 150 students) • improved knowledge and understanding of the teaching processes as well as Norwegian and multicultural society values, for two students Bilateral funds (if they = EEA mobility grants) considerably contributed to strengthened bilateral relations at the project or programme level. No preparatory visit was undertaken. Such a visit was deemed unnecessary due to the previous collaboration and knowledge transfer possibility. Briefly describe how the partner(s) contributed to the project (e.g. in terms of strengthening results, innovation, visibility). The School of English and American Studies at Eötvös Loránd University published many posts on our facebook page, strengthening the visibility of the project results. We organized public lectures as well, in order to disseminate as wide as possible the research output of participants. The Norwegian donor partner invited our staff on mobility to research seminars, trainings and informal talks to strengthen results, communication of innovative practices and build further ties. The School of English and American Studies at Eötvös Loránd University did the same, although due to the fact that we had only 2 incoming donor partner researchers, we did not have such a wide reach.
