Description

The education in its current state does not encourage youngsters to realize their own initiations, also does not support them in forming their ideas to plans or implementing them. The main object of the project is to make a community café in Nyíregyháza which will be operated by volunteers who can gain professional experience. The Café will be the community space where the students can have leisure activities with their friends and peer groups, and they can activate their community-building skills and implement their own ideas. The project promoter will contact the representatives of the secondary schools in the town and inform them about the project. Students will be involved with the help of a preview questionnaire that will map their knowledge. Selected youth will participate in facilitated team building programs. A strategy, an action plan and community events will be planned with the help of mentors. A study about the experiences will be edited. The target group of the project includes secondary school students, cooperating secondary schools and non-governmental organizations, as well as disadvantaged youngsters between the ages of 14-26 living in in the region.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to establish a Community Coffehouse in Nyíregyháza – named Labor Café - which is run by 14-26 years old volunteers. The objective was to realize a place which functions as an intellectual and community platform from which the actively participating youngsters could benefit (both morally and work experience). Already the beginning was realized with community collaboration: local entrepreneurs helped in renovation, private persons donated cups, mugs, glasses, furniture and several other objects. Later, secondary school students volunteered thus by contributing to the daily run of the coffeehouse, they could also accomplish their compulsory school service. 15 youth became a core group who were reliable and active and this group became able to decide independently, they shared the responsibilities of the daily run and contributed to the communication and event organizing tasks. During the project 31 youth could realize their ideas thus they could do several free-time activities with their peers from 4 different local secondary schools. The Foundation also cooperated with 5 other organizations and organized thematic events in the Labor Café. Thanks to a variety of programs, this open place became popular among every age group: children, youngsters, mothers, fathers, teachers, professionals, elders, musicians and artists etc.
