Description

Somogy, Vasas, Hird are small, adherent villages that were connected to Pécs (chief town of the county) in the 50s, mainly because of economic reasons. The mine that had ensured the welfare services there was closed in 1993 thus the maintaining system collapsed and the welfare model folded. The main objective of the project is to move these districts from apathy and to find out development plans. The project aims to generate cooperation and interest enforcement among communities and also to supply the necessary community services like establishment of a Community Informational Centre and a Community Building and Problem Solving Workshop. The implementer will map the local resources by organizing forums and propagating voluntary activities through sport events. In order to strengthen the local identity they will assemble a Calendar with an activity plan thus events, workshops and free-time activities for each age group will be organized effectively. The local Civil Guard Association is a collaborator. The target group contains local communities, families and civic organizations and wants to achieve the similar, neighboring mine-towns and civic organizations.

Summary of project results

Somogy, Vasas, Hird are small, adherent villages that used to be connected to Pécs (chief town of the county) in the 50s, mainly because of economic reasons. The mine that had ensured the welfare services was closed in 1993 thus the maintaining system collapsed and the welfare model folded. The main objective of the project was to move these districts from apathy and to make development plans in order to generate cooperation and interest enforcement among communities and also to supply the necessary community services like establishment of a Community Informational Centre and a Community Building and Problem Solving Workshop. A local situation analysis was concluded, a challenge cup was organized in which local economic actors were awarded for their CSR activity. Several community programs were established and implemented: community days, counselling in 3 themes. A self-help group was established in which –mainly unemployed- people learned about gardening and agricultural production. A youth club was launched which offered several permanent programs e.g. tale-telling, study trips. The project focused not only the development of the local civic sector (with the counselling opportunities) and the business sector (challenge cup, market events for local products), but also for the public sector. Local citizens and representatives of the authorities met 24 times during the project implementation in order to build trust, discuss local (public safety) issues and establish cooperation within the concerned actors. The project promoter has 20 new cooperation agreements and more than 2800 people participated in the community programs. Citizens became more tolerant and they were activated in common, local issues that strengthened the community and the local identity. The model program was summarized in a methodological guide and a 3 days long model transferring workshop was organized in Pereces (small town in the North-eastern part of Hungary which used to be a mine-town but now belongs to Miskolc, one of the biggest towns in the region).
