Description

People with reduced mobility face two problems in Budapest: on one hand the membership of the movement is getting old, they need recruitment. On the other hand their 18 organizations cover 16 districts thus disabled people in 7 districts lack advocacy opportunities. The main objective of the project is to establish local self-supportive organizations (with at least 10-15 members) in these districts that help the membership with copying local regulatory and physical barriers, and representing their interests. It aims to generate an effective cooperation between the local government and the disabled people and connect the newly founded organizations into the decision-making processes. The project promoter will implement a research of needs and define solutions in order to solve the problems; each district will have an introduction material. The project promoter will organize trainings and forums for the activists. It will elaborate a common lobby plan. The target group includes 655 disabled people who are already registered in one of the 7 districts, their families, and other disabled people who are not registered yet.

Summary of project results

The movement of people with physical disabilities has two main problems, on the one hand, the members of the movement became old, and their aftergrowth is needed. And in 7 districts of Budapest, there were no representation of them. So, the main objective of the project was to change this situation by establishing self-help organizations in these districts with active involvement of youth. Another goal was to create conditions for cooperation with the local government in these districts, thus the established organizations would be able to represent and articulate the problems, needs of persons with physical disabilities to decision makers and also a needs assessment was aimed to support the activity of local advocacy. So the Association of People with Physical Disabilities Budapest established 7 new organizations in Budapest as self-help groups. These organizations main task was to observe, assess the conditions of local disabled persons, and to organize proper programs with them for them based on their needs. Altogether 8 trainings were organized for the activists in the frame of the project, which were attended by 25 persons each. The trainings focused on the roles, tasks of the association, the legal knowledge of disabled persons, available services for people with physical disabilities, competencies of local government, program organization, communication, accessibility, management issues and equal opportunities. The local Equal Opportunities Programs of the 7 districts were examined, and the participants formulated recommendations how to improve criteria applied in the supervision of programs of disabled persons. A campaign plan was designed and implemented in order to ensure that the metro cars and stations of Metro3 Budapest would be absolutely accessible. On the posters of the campaign besides the need of disabled persons, the needs of those using prams and bigger bags, and even elderly people were represented. The “Metro3 is for everyone” is the Facebok page of the campaign (in Hungarian: ’Az M3 metró mindenkié’.
