Description

By reducing the support of extremist ideas among the ordinary people, we would like to overshadow the one-dimensional thinking about the Roma population in our campaign. It is well known that the image of the Roma population in the mainstream media is distorted and focuses on the poverty and the crime, and on the “positive” side there are only pop musicians. This image affects not only by the majority, but the Roma population itself, who socialize by the same mainstream media. The lack of positive image inhibits the paths of personal success as well as obstruct the emergence of a strong Roma movement. During our 6 months long campaign we would like to show that, despite the slipping to the periphery for 25 years, the Roma population is still an integral part of the Hungarian society. Living in poverty is not waiting for the benefits. There are several survival techniques that helps the Roma people to generate a daily income for their family. We would like to introduce ordinary and extraordinary Roma people who are successful in their professions as bakers, bus drivers, factory directors, etc.

Summary of project results

The campaign successfully called the attention of the Hungarian population to the fact that Romani people are organic part of the Hungarian society. The campaign reached at least the one third of the population. The "Golden Strap" prize was founded for everyday Romani heroes. A young geneticist won the prize according to ten thousands of reader's votes. He has become well-known since then countrywide. The project introduced forgotten Romani heroes as well who were part and formers of Hungarian history and who can all be proud of. The "Machine Tales" gastrovideo-miniseries presented the traditional Romany cuisine and the family stories behind them. The "Public Labour Quitters" report-series presented the ordinary Romani people making their living from hard work. The organization coordinated a colourful program-series at the International Romani Day which most of the Hungarian NGOs took part in.
