Description

The source of the prejudices of Hungarian youth can be found in socialization. Surveys show that they do not base their prejudices on real personal experiences. The objective of the project is to confront youth with the personal aspects of exclusion. It aims to gain such experience that will be useful for pedagogies and group leaders to help them with educating children who belong to minorities. The expected outcome of the project is to establish the civic consciousness and self-awareness of youth and encourage them for the active participation in a society of different subcultures. The members of association and the involved youth create and perform an interactive performance based on the Holocaust. After performances they will initiate discussion with the audience. The organization develops a website which will be the online platform to present the experience and will be available for everyone thus anyone can be informed about the project during the implementation. The project focuses on youth between the age of 12 and 18: performances will achieve 10 classes (25 students from each class) and 10 classes (10 students from each class) will be involved in film production.

Summary of project results

The source of the prejudices of Hungarian youth can be found in socialization: surveys show that they do not base their prejudices on real personal experiences. The objective of the project was to confront youth with the personal aspects of exclusion. The project promoter and its partner delegated volunteers to the project who were working on the forum theater performance. The play was performed 9 times in front of 8-34 youth. The attitude of them was examined with the help of questionnaires. Also the project promoter examined that which was the situation that made the most passive youth interact. The performances were closed by workshops so they could discuss the issues. A feature film was also elaborated with the active involvement of youth: they initiated several modifications in the play script and in the texts so the play became more like their own. First, they participated in focus groups where they discussed prejudices, exclusions and examining their own surroundings from these aspects. The film was special because there was only one film but several communities and each parts of the film was played by other groups – so one character was played by more youth. In order to easily identify the characters they prepared T-shirts. The premier night was really exciting for the youth as this was the first occasion they could meet. Not only the feature film, but a werk film was introduced. 82 participants were on the event, as youth brought their friends, too. After watching the films, they discussed the experiences and impressions in workshops. There was a positive attitude change in participating youth: they became more open towards these issues and became more tolerant.
