Description

Some people have a negative attitude towards minorities. Minorities are often victims of segregation, discrimination and exclusion. Their social integration is a long process that requires tolerance and support from the majority. The objective is to improve the social competencies, raise the self-consciousness of the participating youth thus their integration into society will be easier. Introduction of migrants from a different aspect is an aim, the prejudices will reduce and the project will help migrants’ integration. A blog will be created, operated and moderated by civic participants. The youngsters can write their stories – the main language is Hungarian, but they can use their mother tongue as well. The Tilos Radio will report the project events and the youngsters can also take part in editing Radio shows. An interactive theater performance will be created that will be performed by participants with the help of professional actors and actresses. A music production will present the intercultural dialogue and social diversity. The target group involves migrant communities especially students of Chinese and Muslim schools (about 600-800 persons).

Summary of project results

Some people have a negative attitude towards minorities. Minorities are often victims of segregation, discrimination and exclusion. Their social integration is a long process that requires tolerance and support from the majority. The objective was to improve the social competencies, raise the self-consciousness of the participating youth thus to ease their social integration. The organization made cooperation with 2 schools in which the project was introduced and youth could apply to participate. According to the legal circumstances applications could be accepted if the youth got permission from their parents or guardians – so the selection process lasted a bit longer than expected. Finally, 15 youth were able to join who participated in several workshops like creative writing, blogging and drama pedagogy. They become the writers of the play elaborated in the project. The writings of youth were posted on the blog. Unfortunately, the association had to pay a lot of attention on moderating the negative comments. Finally, because of the tough situation of migrants and refugees in Hungary, youth did not played roles in the performance. Professional actors and actresses accepted the invitation of the well-known director, Schermann Márta. The performance used new technics as it was a radio-theater performance. Its title “Neighbors” refers to the content in which a family is talking about their Arab, Vietnamese or Russian neighbors with prejudices – it was a caricature performance. Instead of twice the performance was played three times – according to the huge interest. The night was closed with a concert which was special because the improvisation included typical melodies from different continents. However youth were not performing, they participated in every stage thus evaluation workshops were organized for them. The project had a positive effect on youth – their tolerance towards each other and the Hungarian society improved. Schools got a new method that they can use after the project; and the network of the association was broadened.
