Description

Our goal is to strengthen the democratic values and responsibility of Roma youth in secondary schools. The target group will be from 30 to 60 Roma secondary schools students; 30 of our current scholars, and their families, all together ca. 400-450 person. Our main methods and activities will be mentoring, tutoring, community-building, follow-up, monitoring and external evaluation. The secondary school students will take part on trainings and community building, mentored by our scholars. The project is based on the active approach and cooperation of the participants; at the beginning the mentors will seek for their students, the students shall take part actively in their cooperative relation with their mentors, and the outcomes will be produced by the participants. For example, the Roma youngsters will communicate the project together (creating multimedia content about the activities) for the Romaversitas homepage and share the experiences on their own network.

Summary of project results

The shortcomings of minority representation necessitates the strengthening of responsibility-taking skills and democratic values of young Roma. The aim of the Romaversitas project was to provide instruction for Roma youth in secondary education, through mentoring, training and individual consultations to foster their chances for further studies in higher education. In the project students took part in an active citizenship training programme, an intensive English language course (summer, 2015), then, from September 2016, worked as interns. The project’s target group was 30 Roma secondary school students (mentorees) and some Romaversitas higher-ed grantees (mentors). The results: 21 mentorees (out of 30) were accepted in state-financed higher-ed programmes, two applied successfully to foreign universities. From the 21 students, 11 also became Romaversitas grantees. To adapt and use the experience, results of the mentoring scheme, Romaversitas is to launch complex secondary school support programmes in the future.
