Description

This project is needed because of the popularity of extreme right-wing radicalism has doubled during the past years, and during the election campaign itself such sentiments were voiced. The objective of the project is the suppression of hate speech, in order to reduce racism. Through this project the PP will achieve that hate speech perpetrators become aware of their criminal responsibility. They will collect material and transfer it to defenders of law so that they can take legal action. The project will address these challenges though members of the LBGTQ community & awareness will be raised through posters, text comments, and a social media campaign will be launched. The PP will hold a press conference. This will benefit the LGBTQ minority. The partnerships will strengthen by collaboration with the members of the LBGTQ umbrella organization.

Summary of project results

The PP developed and used comments to respond to homophobic remarks online (in comment sections of main portal as well as social media), so as to change the attitudes of the verbal attackers towards the LGBT community - it was observed that in instances they become more positive or at least not so radical. Over 800.000 people were reached by the project, many of them extremist party supporters. The Hungarian LGBTQ community has started to react to online verbal homophobia. LGBTQ activists participated in the project – they both learned and passed on methods to other LGBTQ people that help them react to homophobic remarks in everyday life. Furthermore, several homophobic commenters have changed their view on LGBTQ people. Using the experiences of the project, FriGo will strengthen its cooperation with Hungarian Jewish and Roma organizations as these three groups are similarly affected by hate speech. In addition, FriGo will facilitate cooperation with young journalists to reach out to the youth, the age group that is most severely affected by far right ideologies.
