Description

This project is an informal educational program - Virtual Encounters with Survivors and Witnesses through Jewish Local History Walks. The aim of the project is to familiarize students with the history and tradition of the Jewish in Hungary as well as with the Holocaust and its consequences. Knowledge gained will develop critical thinking skills and on a longer perspective this will result in an attitude and behavior change. As a result, students will become more open-minded and more tolerant. The objective will be achieved by creating special downloadable mobile applications of the survival’s interviews and organizing sightseeing tour around Budapest integrating the interviews into the tour. The most important change is that students become more dismissive against stereotypes and more sensitive towards minority rights. All these values will be made evident for teachers as well.

Summary of project results

Youth today do not have sufficient information about the history of Hungarian Jewry. The objective of the project was to provide knowledge, to develop critical thinking and to contribute to the development of a more tolerant society by educating responsible citizens. It was important to change the attitude of the participating youngsters. The participants recognized the role of the individuals in the fight against the prejudices, antisemitism. The project contributed to improved social tolerance, attitudes, to the ability of acceptance and to value the rights of minorities in a complex way. 27 students were trained who later led interactive walks: the walks were organized in the historical Jewish quarter of Budapest; and with the help of tablets video clips were shown. 49 groups of students were interested in the project, 60 interactive walks were organized and about 280 teachers were actively involved.
