Description

Pécsbányatelep is an old part of Pécs settlement which became very poor and decaying after closing the active mine. Many local families struggle for daily living, they do not get too much support from the local government, and their children cannot participate in most of the school’s programs. The goal of the project is to continue supporting a youth club in the Community House of Pécsbánya which was established three years ago by local youth. The program contains 4 developments: self-knowledge, future planning, healthy living, creativity and support of talent in order to foster active participation and help to take responsibility within the community. It is important to preserve and strengthen successfully operating activities as nature hikes, film club talks and community workshop sessions (community painting, re-art). Direct group: 30 local children, Indirect group: relatives and local inhabitants (400 people), 30 member of the Association.

Summary of project results

The main objective of the project was to make the participating 4-20 y.o. children’s identity stronger and to increase their responsibility for their residence, Pécsbányatelep. Roma and non-Roma children took part in a 5-day-long creative camp where they made garden furniture (recycling waste) and produced a theatrical performance. During the project a local amateur football team was created, a gypsy music workshop, a theatrical workshop, creative workshops, film clubs, workshops about self-knowledge, health and media were organized. Usually, 12-15 youth took part at these occasions. A 10 minutes long film about the project and an audio CD with Roma folklore songs performed by participants were produced. Through an academic year, 16 volunteering students helped children to learn. The project helped the participants to broaden their knowledge about social participation, natural environment thus their awareness developed.
