Description

If climate change comes into question, the majority turns away with the skeptic question: what can I do against it? By reducing meet consumption ecological footprint of the ordinary life-style can be significantly cut back. Hence, this project conducts a nationwide campaign for the introduction of the Meat Free Monday movement with all sorts of traditional or new media communication possibilities (campaign page, web2 and community media channels, printed materials, workshops, street campaign, etc.), and with a special focus on restaurants.

Summary of project results

The aim and the main result of the project was the introduction of the international meat-free Monday movement in Hungary, which is an effective means of encouraging a more sustainable lifestyle. For the main tool of the campaign the project has created the www.husmenteshetfo.hu web site that provides practical information, related articles, background materials, infographics related to meat consumption (and its environmental impact) as well as opportunities for joining the movement. During its implementation, the Foundation expanded its co-operation with various NGOs, public bodies, restaurants and catering companies, the Meatless Monday Movement was promoted through more than 20 school, professional, cultural and culinary events by the means of personal information, playful tests, informative publications, presentations and non-formal class workshops beside an intensive media work and social media presence. During the lifetime of the project a total of about 100,000 people were reached by the campaign, and by the end of November 2014, 2,300 persons has joined the movement. By holding a meat-free day a week, these people emit 3 kg of carbon dioxide and 350 tonnes of carbon dioxide less greenhouse gases into the atmosphere (that equals to the power production of an 300kW solar farm), contributing to achievement of the country's and EU's emission reduction targets. Those joining the movement with their meat-free "green diets" can measurably and effectively reduce their ecological footprint, but, in addition to slowing down climate change, they may also switch to a healthier and more conscious diet, which also has significant health impacts.
