Description

The goal of the project is to set-up a lichen biomonitoring system in the Sajo-valley in order to identify and monitor the main air-pollutants of the Wanhua-BC chemical industry in Kazincbarcika, Hungary, that has been working without any biological monitoring system up to now. Target groups include the environmental management of the company, the experts and officers of the georgraphically responsible Environmental Authority, the grammar and elementary school students as well as the inhabitants of both the city and the impacted area. As a result of the collection and (partly laboratory) analysis of linche samples and other related data a lichen map will be realized and communicated. Besides, stakeholder dialogue between citizens, management of the chemical industry and the local environmental authority will be promoted, and further public information activities will be carried out (public forums, school presentations, leaflets, etc.) too.

Summary of project results

The goal of the project was to set-up a lichen based biomonitoring system in the Sajo-valley in order to identify and monitor the main air-pollutants released by the Wanhua-Borsodchem chemical industry in Kazincbarcika that had been criticised earlier many times for causing serious pollution in the area. The project has developed the methodology and framework of the monitoring system and tested it by the means of defining sample points, collecting the lichen samples and getting them analysed in a nationally accredtied laboratory. The main outcome of the project is the monitoring framework itself: repeating the standardeized assessment time by time will provide credible data for the environmental monitoring on the long run. Beside the research the project promoter aimed at creating local partnerships and starting local stakehodlder dialogues by the means of involving and informing the environmental management of the company as well as the local authorities in the forms of serveral discussions and a professional workshop. Public information activities were carried out too in the forms of public forums, school presentations, leaflets and a video published online.
