Description

One of the green area part in the environment of UDP will be adapted for multi- sensory experiences in nature, shaping the garden for usage for members of the DTI, pupils, students and employees of the UDP and the citizens of Rijeka, for their leisure activities and participation in the horticultural and non- horticultural activities. This cooperation will strengthen persons with disabilities( PWD) in their social, cognitive, physical and psychological aspects. Pupils and students, as well as citizens will become more aware for problems of this vulnerable group. Preparations for this action were cleaning the surface of the solid waste and land leveling, fencing the garden, and now there will be landscaping Multisensory garden including planting plants and paving paths in the garden section. The goal of the action is development and accommodate the open space for needs of PWD, sensitizing pupils and students of UDP and citizens of Rijeka for needs of PWD and joint coexistence.

Summary of project results

A devastated area was in desperate need for a renovation, and therefore a garden was set up that can be used in medical purposes (therapeutic horticulture). The garden will be taken care of in the future be its users on a volunteer basis. The main objective was to renew the area but also to include volunteers and local citizens in this task in order to raise the solidarity in the community. Large number of appearances in various media (printed newspapers, portals, radio, television) informed wider community of this civil action, so a great amount of public, and most importantly – volunteers and local community were included. Citizens and members of the local district, as well as people with physical disabilities, together with pupils, students and employees of the school, were involved in preparing the ground of Multisensory garden: planting plants and herbs, set the path and benches made of different materials. In addition, all the participants took part in the use of sustainable materials that stimulate different senses, became aware of their role in building a custom surface to stimulate all the senses. Therefore, there is a green space created and adapted for the quality leisure time, especially for people with disabilities, the citizens of Rijeka, primarily living in the field of the local district Podmurvice and pupils, students and employees of the school.
