Description

The supply of water for domestic use on the island of Crete remains a concern for several Municipalities, especially those which have remote villages and farms without easy access to fresh water. The objective of the project is to demonstrate the application of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) for water pumping. Through the project photovoltaic systems will be installed in several municipal water tanks in order to pump water with the exploitation of solar energy. The project is expected to achieve significant energy savings, to familiarize local citizens with this sustainable practice and to improve the quality of life in these communities. The main beneficiaries of the project will be the citizens of Municipalities with dissemination activities also generating awareness among the broader public.

Summary of project results

The Water Management sector in Greece is responsible for the inefficient consumption of large amount of energy in order to cover water needs. A sustainable approach to face this problem is to increase penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in water management infrastructure (like water pumping stations). The objective of the Project can be summarized in the use of Renewable energy Sources for the stand-alone operation of water pumps and the consequent reduction of the CO2 emissions, which contributes to achieving the national and European targets for Energy and Environment, as well as the upgrade of the relevant economic activities. The targets achieved regarding the integration of Renewable Energy Sources systems in the water tank are the following: • Total RES production of 191,28 MWh/year (Target 189.55 MWh/year), • CO2 emissions reduction of 145.36 tn/year (Target: 144.1 tn/year). Moreover, 2 events within the framework of bilateral relations were organized (Target: 2). Additionally, it should be noted that the integration of best practices in water management creates new business opportunities by creating complete, innovative solutions for cost saving and promoting human resources specialization in new technologies. The project is expected to achieve integration of best practices in water management by increasing the renewable energy consumption and to strengthen awareness and education in the sustainable use of renewable energy, familiarizing inhabitants with sustainable practices. Achieved: Increase of RES consumption by 191.28 ΜWh/year. Activation of Island Communities and local population with RES Actions. Outputs delivered:  Applied RES Technical Solution (PVs combined with off-grid water pumps)  Metering System  Information Material  Guide for Best Practices in use of RES in Water Management. O.A.K. S.A. has applied a PV technical solution into one of it’s self-owned water tank buildings. The beneficiary achieved to increase the renewable energy consumption and strengthen awareness in the sustainable use of energy. Moreover, this project is an emblematic project and state of the art project for the Organization for the Development of Crete on national and international level by combining in harmony high-level innovative technology and a pilot character.
