Description

The public sector in Greece is responsible for the inefficient consumption of large amount of energy. One of the main reasons for that is the low penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in public infrastructures over the last 30 years. The objective of the project is to improve the sustainable development of the Community of Grevena by realizing RES projects in several Community’s areas. Through the project RES Technologies (Photovoltaics, Solar thermal collectors, Geothermal heat pumps, etc.) will be applied into a wide range of public buildings and Infrastructures of the Community. The project is expected to achieve the increase of renewable energy consumption and to strengthen awareness and education in the sustainable use of renewable energy, familiarizing inhabitants with sustainable practices and improving the quality of life. The main beneficiaries of the project will be the citizens of the Community with dissemination activities also generating awareness among the broader public.

Summary of project results

The Public sector in Greece is responsible for the inefficient consumption of large amount of thermal and electric energy especially in buildings with high energy needs such as gyms, swimming pools, hospitals etc. A sustainable approach to face this problem is to increase penetration of RES in public buildings and infrastructures. The objective of this project was the selection of public buildings, places and installations where integrated RES actions were implemented in order to achieve: • energy upgrade and savings • demonstration of relevant actions to active groups and • reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the framework of “20-20-20” obligations. Achieved:Total RES consumption 778 MWh/year (Target: 690.3 MWh/year) The reduction of 1,170 tn/year CO2 emission through the implementation of RES actions in the community (Target 1,111.92 tn/year). The organization of 3 events within the framework of bilateral relations (Target:3) The project is expected to achieve the increase of renewable energy consumption and to strengthen awareness and education in the sustainable use of renewable energy, familiarizing inhabitants with sustainable practices. Achieved:RES consumption of 778 MWh/year (Target: 690.3 MWh/year). Activation of nearby communities and local population with RES actions. Outputs delivered: 1. Public building of Region (Autonomous PV 60 kW, LED lightning, Compensation capacitors, Heat pump, Charging station of electric vehicles through solar energy) 2. General hospital of Grevena (Autonomous PV 40 kW, Solar thermal system, LED lightning, Compensation capacitors) 3. Public indoor swimming pool (Solar thermal system, Pipe insulation) 4. Public indoor gym (Solar thermal system) 5. Students Dormitory (Autonomous PV 20 kW, Solar thermal system) 6. Educational Building (Autonomous PV 60 kW, Geothermal heat pump 160kW, LED lightning) 7. Measuring equipment (smart meters) installed to each building for detailed recordings of energy produced and consumed The beneficiaries (Region of Western Macedonia, Municipality of Grevena and General Hospital of Grevena) have applied several RES technical solutions into their buildings and premises. They achieved to increase the renewable energy consumption and to strengthen awareness in the sustainable use of energy.
