Description

The Federico Garcia Lorca Centre safeguards and promotes access to cultural heritage through the new Lorca Studies Institute and the conservation of the Federico García Lorca Collection. Up to 100 research projects will be carried out on a first stage. The Centre’s activities will attract an estimated amount of 300,000 people during the first year by offering new and attractive cultural events, exhibitions, workshops and conferences. These contribute to cultural tourism, local development and new jobs. They also gear up people’s access to heritage. Youths and people at risk of social exclusion are also a priority for the Centre. At least 12 pedagogical activities are scheduled within this framework. Workshops for children and young adults will be prepared (2,000 under-privileged visitors expected). Activities are underway to strengthen bilateral relations at international level.

Summary of project results

The work and life of Federico García Lorca offer key historical and cultural points of reference. Lorca worked in a period of great political and social turmoil. His work empowered people to reflect upon core values: human dignity, solidarity, the freedom of the individual, tolerance, social progress. The Centro Federico García Lorca aspires to become a benchmark in contemporary culture, preserving and disseminating Lorca’s legacy, exhibiting international artworks, and undertaking extensive initiatives with children and young people to foster their engagement with the arts. The Centre is a venue for generating art, culture and thinking, constantly active and close to the publics. A place that welcomes public participation to support and encourage artists in all disciplines and with an extensive educational programme targeted at all audiences. Above all, it is intended to operate as a cultural institution that gives top priority to the power of words in all their forms: written, spoken, performed and sung. The equipment and starting up of the Centre represents a key tool to, on the one hand, raise awareness among the population on the need to valorise and preserve the intangible heritage beyond time that an author like Lorca represents and, from the socio-economic perspective, increase wealth and employment within the region. The Centro Federico García Lorca is important for various reasons: • It provides a better understanding of Lorca’s work and how this is linked to the development of contemporary art and culture and current European values. • It is a platform for contemporary arts in all its facets. • It increases the value of cultural industries within the region generating employment and wealth. The Centro Federico García Lorca opened its doors on 29 July 2015. The Centre has developed a cultural programme providing the public with an outstanding range of options in the field of contemporary creativity, in literature, music, thinking, film, drama, visual arts, etc. It has also organized workshops in a range of creative disciplines. Since its opening, it has played a role in raising awareness about cultural diversity, through a comprehensive cultural and didactic programme targeted at all audiences. It will also be the setting for performances, concerts, film screenings, conferences and debates. The Centre has welcomed more than 85,000 visitors and organised almost 200 cultural and educational activities.
