Description

The objective of the project is to help creating a more equitable society in terms of access and exercise of sexual and reproductive rights, with a special emphasis on young women and women of migrant origin. The project expects to mobilize professionals and civil society to achieve equitable access to and exercise of sexual and reproductive rights (SRR) through a cultural, cross-sectorial and participatory approach to human rights and gender, with special attention to vulnerable groups (young women and women of migrant origin) in Spain, particularly in Catalonia. The project outcomes are as follows: - Professionals from the health sector - Civil society is made aware of the importance of issues related to access to and exercise of sexual and reproductive rights (SRR) in a context of cultural diversity The target groups will be: a) Professionals involved in sexual and reproductive health and the prevention and treatment of violence against women from the public; b) Representatives of civil society, taking part in the talks on SRHR. c) Young people, particularly those at risk of social exclusion.

Summary of project results

The cultural factors are core to contributing to improve the Access and quality of the health and violence against women services. The project has conducted research, trained and raised awareness in the sexual and reproductive health rights with special focus on youth and migrant women in Spain. DECIDES Spain has promoted a dialogue between the sectors that usually work separately (health, gender, education, culture etc,) in order to have a comprehensive approach to the sexual and reproductive health rights. The activities are the following: research on the current situation of the migrants in Catalonia regarding their access to the sexual, emotional and reproductive health; development of information, education and communication materials, as well as awareness raising materials in various formats (web, online papers, videos etc.); training sessions for professionals in the health sector. Also, activities for awareness raising for the population and the health professionals coming from several countries were carried out. The response from the direct beneficiaries, (professionals of the health sector, migrant associations and NGOs working with them, the migrants themselves, particularly the women in fertile age, the youth, and the general public) has been very positive. Many of them expressed the need of participating in this project that helps the professionals to cope with the cultural differences and the migrants to be empowered.
