Description

The main objective of the project is the research of new and best monitoring strategies applied to the sensing of energy resources and environmental pollution in urban areas for the building of sustainable smart cities. Even today there is no city that has largely validated the use of this technology despite the existence of many smart city projects. The activities implemented during this research include the development of a technological system that allows any institution to have a platform to remotely manage energy resources (water and power) and environmental pollution, which will feature several elements such as sensory elements, communication modules, M2M platform for data collection and an operation center management for comprehensive monitorization of all energy resources. The results of the research are expected to benefit both city council and national/international public administrations responsible for the management of energy resources in their respective countries, as well as companies engaged in the design and distribution of technological solutions adapted to the monitorization of such resources. The Norwegian Institute for Air Research is a partner in the project.

Summary of project results

The most important objective of this project is research and development of a technological system that allows any institution to have a platform to remotely manage energy resources (water and power) and environmental pollution in their city. This objective has been fully achieved because we have built the platform software and developed centers of operation and monitoring services lighting, water management and air pollution. The most important project deliverables have been: monitoring software platform, measuring air pollution equipment on vehicles, fixed stations air pollution low-cost, humidity sensors and low-cost deployment of fiber optic network. The developed system is deployed in a test environment and demonstration of Wairbut to be used for customer demonstrations and continuing research projects with research centers. Furthermore, this system has already been deployed and configured to the SmartCity project Pozuelo (Madrid) as the first commercial implementation.

Summary of bilateral results

NILU, NORSK INSTITUTT FOR LUFTFORSKNING, has contributed in this project through studies and research in the field of air pollution in cities. Their participation has been important, as the performed studies on the current low cost sensors for the assessment of air quality and public information helped identify current challenges and future needs of our cities. There have been studies of algorithms and data assimilation methodologies and application development for monitoring air quality based on low-cost technologies and citizen science. The project also delivered a roadmap for using low-cost sensors in designing and crowdsourcing Smartcities, enabling the design of a central operation and monitoring based on low-cost sensors.
