Description

The project focuses on the prevention phase of strengthening the support system for the Pärnu Woman’s Shelter in order to distinguish the women in need for support in an early stage. The outcome of the project will be a model, which can be later used also by other NGOs offering women shelter services. The project will improve the speed and spectrum of how the domestic violence is noticed and distinguished in order to offer support for the women and children faster and more efficiently than before. Also the victims will be supported and guided in the post-shelter process in order to offer them the help needed for managing an independent life. The goal of the support group is to help to strengthen the confidence of the women who have been the victims of domestic violence and strengthen the support of the mother-children relationship and social capabilities in an independent life. The project will use new methods to achieve this. For example through the use of drama and nature camps, art and nature therapies where both mothers and children can work together. The support system of the shelter will receive training to improve the detection of domestic violence.

Summary of project results

The Project was necessary to create a methodological model for early detection of gender based violence. So far there are no universal documents for that. As a result of the Project the model was created and it is now possible to use it in every womens' shelter. Also many activities were carried out to train people and to raised people's knowledge of gender-based violence and the ways to help people suffering of it. The added to the created model is that three subgoals were achieved: 1) voluntary staff, supporting members and council members of Pärnu Womans' Shelter were trained to detect gender-based violence and trained to guide such people to the shelter. Three trainings with 92 participants altogether were carried out. 2) Wider knowledge of Pärnu Woman's Shelter services and early detection of gender-based violence was achieved through three roundtables and four lectures. Also opening and final conference was held for 74 people among which were for example specialists from different institutions, journalists and people from Pärnu town. 3) Creative activities for women participating in the support group were carried out. In 11 creative activities 180 women participated. Altogether people in Pärni town are now more aware of the services of Pärnu Women's Shelter, people are more aware how to detect gender-based violence, they know how to seek for help, institutions in the field have better cooperation and women suffering from gender-based violence gained from creative activities.
