Description

The main goal of the project is to advance the principle of equal treatment and increase the effectiveness of protection from discrimination in Estonia through network based strategic advocacy activities and cooperation among NGOs. With the creation of the equal treatment network, cooperation in the field of advocacy and awareness-raising is increased and that is a prerequisite for societal impact. As a result of the project, the capacity and capability of advocacy is increased to work with the governmental institutions and influence them to better follow and value the principle of equal treatment. The project is expected to achieve an equal treatment network for organizations involved in advocacy. The equal treatment network will document different discrimination cases and give input for changing the Equal Treatment Act. The Project will address challenges in rising the capacity of advocacy in the field of fighting against discrimination among those organizations.

Summary of project results

The main goal of the project was to advance the principle of equal treatment and increase the effectiveness of protection from discrimination in Estonia through network based strategic advocacy activities and cooperation among NGOs. During the project an Equal treatment network of 6 NGOs was formed: Human Rights Centre, Estonian Womens´ Roundtable, Estonian Chamber of Disabled Persons, Estonian LGBT Union, Estonin National Youth Council, Tallinn Human Rights Information Centre. The Network will continue cooperation and activities after this project – a New Network Contract is signed. The Network will enlarge – one new organization is also united. During the project a cooperation in the field of advocacy and awareness-raising among partners increased in this field. As a result of the project, the capacity and capability of advocacy increased to work with the governmental institutions and influence them to better follow and value the principle of equal treatment. Also, awareness of issues related to equal treatment was raised among NGOs and policymakers. The equal treatment Network gave input for changing the Equal Treatment Act. The Network was actively involved in preparing a document for changing a law. Beneficiaries from the project were disabled people, women, youth, sexual minorities, non-Estonians. The Network was able to impact politicians and make proposals for coalition agreement. Politicians are well aware that Equal Treatment Network exists and impacts society. As a result of the Network, in Parliament an Equal Treatment Support Group among parliamentarians has been formed.
