Description

In Pribram prison there is a lack of space for educational, vocational and leisure activities, which contribute to the successful return of prisoners into society in accordance with European and international standards of human rights. Therefore the aim of the project is to construct a production and training hall in the prison. The objective and expected outcome of the project is to increase the capacity of the treatment of prisoners, increasing the efficiency of their preparation before release, which should contribute to solving problems with an increasing number of prisoners and prison overcrowding and improve their position on the labor market after their release from prison. The available activities will consist of educational activities and training in the field of woodworking, metalworking and ceramics. Three retraining courses will implemented: simple service for restaurant type establishments, culinary work and basic course of PC work.

Summary of project results

The project objective was to increase the capacity of treatment of prisoners and the effectiveness of their preparation before release, which contribute to solving of the problem with increasing number of prisoners and prison overcrowding. In Příbram prison, there was a lack of space for educational, vocational and leisure activities, which would support resocialisation and reintegration and subsequent successful return of inmates into society. The project implementation was negatively influenced by delay of public procurement and construction works and the project had to be extended twice, until 30.4.2017 and subsequently until 31.7.2017. In spite of time constraints, the project succeeded in completing its overall objective, appropriate premises and a functional system for education and employment of prisoners were created and conditions for more successful reintegration into society and reducing of recidivism were increased. Project activities included construction of a production and training hall and realization of educational activities for the inmates. The new premises were furnished by necessary equipment (IT, consumer electronics, home appliances, kitchen equipment, workshop equipment, furniture). During project implementation, 70 inmates took part in the courses of cookery work and simple service for restaurants and 56 inmates took part in the PC courses. All participants passed the final exam and received a certificate. Inmates have thus increased their qualification and acquired working habits handed over by a professional trainer. The outcome of the project, increased capacities for dealing with convicts and increased effectiveness of their preparation before release was thus fulfilled. The new premises serve not only for education (every year at least 60 inmates will pass courses of cookery work and simple service for restaurants and at least 50 inmates will be pass PC courses) but also for work activities such as simple assembly operations or ceramic production. Employment of inmates who cannot leave the prison due to security reasons will be enabled. Inmates will increase their qualification, strengthen working skills and thus improve the chances of success in the labor market. The publicity of the project was realized on web pages or by publishing articles in newspapers and magazines. The project was also presented at the final conference of the Prison Service projects with the participation of Norwegian programme partners.
