Description

A Roma woman, Anna, assumed care of her relative’s children who were sexually abused. The care continued for several years without government institutions being notified about the fact; later, Anna became the foster mother of the children. Currently, the children are of full legal age and completely functional in majority society. The main goal of the project is to create a case study of Anna’s life. It will describe her life strategies and the professional strategies of those involved in the case. The outcomes of the project can be a tool to support the inclusion of Roma in majority society and professional work with victims of domestic violence which could contribute to decreasing occurrences of domestic violence. The target group is care workers. Anna’s biography will have the potential to disrupt their prejudices related to the ethnicity and gender of clients.

Summary of project results

The project arose from the need to provide assistance workers with an example of best practices, as these workers are often burdened with various negative stereotypes. The main output is the creation and use of the monograph (case study) of Anna, a Roma of the Sinti family. Anna took over care for her relative’s children, who had been sexually abused in the nuclear family. To meet the children’s needs, she used specific strategies, shaped by her ethnicity, gender, upbringing and experience. The monograph can work as a tool to support Roma inclusion and professional work with victims of domestic violence, thereby helping to reduce the incidence of this type of violence. The target group of the book is assistance staff. We organised three workshops on the possibilities and limitations of the use of case studies in social work. Anna was published in three free formats (pdf, e-pub and printed version). Sustainability of the project is ensured by the low-threshold accessibility of the monograph, downloadable at Google Books, Google Play, and the Project Anna website.
