Description

This project focuses on implementation of these measures for the The European Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus citellus). The European Ground Squirrel is a specially protected species. The “Action Plan for European Ground Squirrel” was prepared in the year 2007. The project will meet the target of the state environmental policy of the Czech Republic for 2012-2020. European ground squirrel is a typical steppe rodent that is strictly bound to short-breasted grassland. The basic factor influencing the survival of the European ground squirrel in the given locality is the permanently low grassland. In high grass, will lose sight of its surroundings and become an easy predator prey. It has been found that a significant reduction in abundance can also be caused by a relatively short-term management failure lasting only 1-2 seasons. The main objective of the project is the implementation of the action plan by management of grasslands in the Bezděčín area, one of the areas of the species occurrence. The project output is quality and regular management of grassland by mowing in the Bezděčín area. Mowing area will be 70 hectares large and will be mowed 10 times a year In the absence of modernization of the machinery for maintenance of lawns and surrounding planted trees, there will be a significant reduction in the area under management, a cut off of the mowing area outside the take-off area and a general deterioration of the situation in terms of the range of biotopes suitable for the life of the European Ground Squirrel The urgency of the situation is also evidenced by the fluctuating number of animals. In the last 3 years, the loss of European Ground Squirrel has been reported by about 50% compared to pre-2011. The project will also include publicity measures. Which include starting and ending conference, website about the project, memorial table and stickers.
