The project aimed at providing support for women penalized by imprisonment toward successful reintegration in society and for lowering risk of relapse and child abandonment. The target groups included imprisoned women at the prison in Sliven /including mothers of small children, from Roma origin and other minority groups/; prison employees, including the two dormitories; representatives from the NGO sector and local institutions, volunteers, Police employees, etc. The project has offered a practical solution to overcome the identified needs. Basing on a developed model for evaluating risk of relapse and analysis of the women’s needs, their social and psychological needs for making decision, and parenting capacity, adequate psychological services have been provided. 50 imprisoned women have been involved in the related surveys. A specialized programme has been developed for correction and re-socialization of imprisoned women, including those from vulnerable groups /mothers of small children, from Roma origin and other ethnic minorities/. This programme has focused on coordination of employment and housing policy on the one hand, and providing aid through social services for children whose mothers are under imprisonment, including those from vulnerable groups, on the other. The approbation of the programme encompassed over 200 imprisoned women. The capacity of prison personnel in Sliven has been increased for working with women, including those from vulnerable groups in view of their successful reintegration after the end of imprisonment, and effectively reduce the risk of relapse. 4 workshops have token place with the participation of 107 staff members of the Sliven prison.
