Description
The project addresses the need to support the parents of children with disabilities as they bear the brunt of bringing up their children. The project aims at lifting some of the burden off the parents by enabling them to look for better opportunities for their children, uniting them and overcoming negative stereotypes. First, the project will be presented to the stakeholders and a database of parents with disabled children will be created. Second, 6 meetings will be held between parents and children with and without disabilities to overcome the stereotypes. Third, the parents will attend a self-help group twice per month. Next, collective initiatives will be held to unite the community of parents. Fourth, 5-6 parents will be trained as “parents to contact” and they will exchange experience with similar parents from other NGOs. The project will benefit the parents of children with disabilities and the public in general. The partner will provide the premises, volunteers and contacts.
Summary of project results
The project addressed the need to support the parents of children with disabilities as they bear the brunt of bringing up their children. It helped boost the self-confidence of parents of children with disabilities from the town of Targovishte and supported, encouraged and motivated them for new initiatives helping them to find the best solutions for the development of their children. The project activities united the parent community which has been also evident from the habit to communicate outside the project that they developed. The parent self-help groups taught the parents to talk about their issues, look for solutions and not compassion and propose ideas. The idea to use the Parents for Support practice got commitment from the local structures of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy working with children as well as the Multi-Profile Active Treatment Hospital, medical specialists, Regional Health Inspectorate and others. Classes for children were organized under the project and volunteers took part in them. The project was implemented in partnership with Club of NGOs Association. For more information:
